Out today: Advance Base- Live at Home & Casiotone for the Painfully Alone- Vs. Children vinyl reissue Posted 23 Apr 2021

Today is the double release date for two albums by me, Owen Ashworth, the person who runs Orindal Records:

Advance Base- Live at Home collects songs recorded during a series of home concert livestream broadcasts from the spring & summer of 2021, when touring was made impossible by the COVID-19 pandemic. The warm & intimate solo performances on Live at Home recreate the experience of an Advance Base basement show. The album includes three songs from each of the three Advance Base “studio” albums, plus new arrangements of three favorites from the Casiotone for the Painfully Alone catalog, making Live at Home a de facto greatest hits collection, albeit one with its own specific character & unifying aesthetic. It's my favorite album I've ever made!

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone- Vs. Children is a reissue of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's final album. From Jon Doyle's press release: "First released by German label Tomlab in 2009, Vs. Children completed an evolution beyond the strictly electronic style of the early CFTPA releases, using piano, organ, Mellotron, and acoustic percussion to achieve a newfound richness. Coupled with its increasingly mature lyricism, Vs. Children represented something of an inflection point, a turn away from the often harsh keyboard arrangements of past records towards a more organic form. A sound that Ashworth would develop further as Casiotone metamorphosized into his new project, Advance Base."

Jill Whit- time is being album announcement & Touchless / Maybe Means No video premiere Posted 21 Apr 2021

On May 28, Orindal Records will release time is being, a new album by Salt Lake City-based songwriter, musician, tattooer, and fine artist Jill Whit. time is being was entirely self-recorded during the long days of the pandemic in 2020, when, like many others, Jill found herself spending more time alone than ever before. "The album is really an exploration into the body,” Jill explains, “It's about knowing yourself through solitude - gaining a connection to your physical body. It relates to opening up to your inner voice, and connecting the body and spirit through physical and emotional movement; to be ever accepting, shifting, breathing, living, being."

time is being’s distinctive style of “bedroom ambient” blends lush but lo-fi synth pads, gentle electronic beats and wisps of atmospheric guitar as the foundation for Jill’s spoken poetry and emotive singing. time is being and its accompanying zine are an intimate and affirming document of a year spent in isolation and an artist finding new confidence in her voice and vision.

Various Small Flames premiered a music video for time is being's first two singles, "Touchless" & "Maybe Means No," directed by Shey Allen. VSF's Jon Doyle writes:

Through a solo dance performance from Rachel Andes, the video taps into this tactile sensibility and captures the contradictions running through the songs. Starting within the porcelain white confines of a bathroom, and concluding in a desert’s expanse of red rock. Surroundings that mimic the evolving soundscape, where intimacy and loneliness lose their firm divide, and physicality can triumph over empty space.

Pre-order time is being as a limited edition cassette + zine package or on digital formats HERE.

Matt Bachmann- "Apple Pie" single premiere & Dream Logic album announcement Posted 20 Apr 2021

On June 18, 2021, Orindal Records & We Be Friends Records will release Dream Logic, the excellent new album by New York singer, composer & multi-instrumentalist Matt Bachmann. Dream Logic is a hypnotic blend of teary ambient-pop songs and cinematic instrumentals. Its 11 tracks stretch and experiment with genre while holding true to a natural flow. Fans of Bachmann’s last two (and vastly different) Orindal releases— Walking Preference (2019) and Unconditional Love (2018)—will appreciate the way Dream Logic manages to expand on both.

Brooklyn Vegan premiered the album's first single, "Apple Pie," describing it as "a gorgeous, slightly jazzy, vibraphone-fueled ambient pop song that's dedicated to Matt's father." Brooklyn Vegan's Andrew Sacher continues:

"The song kind of combines the delicate intimacy of songwriters like Perfume Genius and Sufjan Stevens with the hypnotic instrumentation of TNT-era Tortoise, and Matt really makes it his own in the process."

Beats Per Minute also shared "Apple Pie." Writer Rob Hakimian describes the single:

"Sweet in more ways than one, but definitely not saccharine, “Apple Pie” is a surprisingly weightless trip down memory lane. Although there are plenty of emotions to pick apart, Bachmann’s words are scarce, only popping in occasionally to reflect briefly on the titular pies and the memory of his father baking them. Mostly, “Apple Pie” finds Bachmann letting his shimmering vibraphone cut a path where his bustling percussion, hyperdrive guitar, some sax and even some snippets of bird song can roam free, wordlessly expressing the tangled knot of feelings going on inside the artist."

Annie Hart- "Sun in the Dark" single premiere & Everything Pale Blue album announcement Posted 13 Apr 2021

On May 7, Orindal Records will release Everything Pale Blue, a gorgeous new album of ambient synthesizer instrumentals by New York City-based composer, songwriter & performer Annie Hart (also of Au Revoir Simone). We're big fans of Annie & we're thrilled to welcome her into the Orindal family!

This morning, GoldFlakePaint premiered "Sun in the Dark", the first single from Everything Pale Blue.

GoldFlakePaint's Tom Johnson writes:

"...the new album is both meandering and meditative, with Hart crafting a whole new world of her own through the gently lapping synthesizer explorations that absorb the listener. It’s prefaced by “Sun in the Dark”, which you can hear below right now; a song that beautifully encapsulates the otherworldly magic of this new body of work. A twinkling tapestry of sound, the song rolls on for nearly ten minutes, barely fluctuating but utterly engrossing nonetheless. Like lying under a perfect summer’s sky, the occasional shifts in tone are minimal but feel striking within their context here."

Mr. Chill by Dan Wriggins is out now! Posted 12 Mar 2021

Mr. Chill, the debut solo EP by Dan Wriggins, is out now! Listen on your preferred streaming service or purchase tapes & downloads HERE. UK & EU buyers can also avoid overseas shipping charges by ordering tapes from our friends at Juno Records.

Here are some press quotes:

“Wry and quietly wonderful... another solemn gem from one of the finest songwriters around.” — GoldFlakePaint

"Dan Wriggins’ voice—gravelly and plaintive and guttural—is one of those voices that gets in your head and stays there, wringing emotion from unseen reserves." — American Songwriter

"Dan Wriggins has led the Philly indie band Friendship for years, but in early 2021 he put out his first single under his own name, and his solo material proved to be some of his most gripping music yet. Now he's back with a solo EP, featuring five new songs (with the two songs from the single as cassette-only bonus tracks), and the whole EP scratches the same appealing itch that those singles did. As a solo artist, Dan makes plainspoken somber folk music that falls somewhere in the Neil Young/Will Oldham realm, and this is some of his most attention-grabbing lyricism yet. It can seem casual and unassuming at first, but before you know it, you're hanging on his every word." — Brooklyn Vegan
